Why Your Room Project Needs a Full Design Palette

Updated: Oct 30, 2023

Beginning any home project seems simple. You pick out paint, fabrics, flooring and other finishes and get to work. As you go along, you notice the paint colors aren't turning out the way they looked on the sample, the flooring once laid down is reflecting different hues you didn't notice and now the fabrics you thought would work so well together are fighting not only each other but the paint color. Now you have to start all over. Both time and money have been wasted. This is why a full room design palette should be selected before the project even begins.

Not every project turns out like that and I don't mean to make it sound all doom and gloom 😆, however, it is the most common occurrence as to why people contact me. My designs always begin with a full palette with samples placed together in the space so you can see how each finish is reflected.

By starting with a full palette, you have the opportunity to explore various color combinations and experiment with different shades and tones. This allows you to create a dynamic and vibrant atmosphere that reflects your personal style and preferences. Whether you prefer bold and vibrant hues or a more subdued and neutral color scheme, a full palette provides you with endless possibilities to express yourself. Starting with a full palette also gives you the flexibility to change and update your room's design over time. By having a variety of colors and textures to work with, you can easily swap out accessories, pillows, or artwork to refresh the look of your space without having to completely overhaul the design. Furthermore, a full palette allows you to incorporate different textures and patterns into your room design. Mixing textures such as smooth fabrics, rough wood, or shiny metals can add depth and tactile appeal to your space. Similarly, incorporating patterns like stripes, florals, or geometric designs can add visual interest and create a dynamic focal point.

In the realm of design and creativity, the process of bringing a vision to life is often a complex and intricate one. The great thing about beginning your project with a full palette is it sets the foundation for creating a cohesive and visually appealing space. Take the Southern Living Palette for example, the different patterns, colors and textures, if you saw them apart would you consider having them all in one room? By exploring different materials, colors, and textures, we can gain a deeper understanding of our ideas and create a cohesive and harmonious final product.

Ordering samples and putting them together is an essential part of the creative process. It allows us to experiment with various elements and envision how they will interact in the final product. Ordering samples provides us with the opportunity to explore different materials and their potential applications. For instance, an architect designing a modern office space may order samples of various types of wood, metal, and glass. By physically examining and comparing these samples, the architect can determine which materials best align with the desired aesthetic and functionality of the space. This process allows for a more informed decision-making process, resulting in a design that seamlessly integrates materials to bring the vision to life.

Samples also play a crucial role in coordinating colors and textures within a design. For instance, when I am creating a new design, I order fabric, area rugs, flooring, tiles, wallpaper samples to see and feel the different colors and textures. By arranging these samples together, both myself and my clients can visualize how different fabrics complement or clash with each other. This exercise helps in creating a harmonious color palette and selecting textures that enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of the collection. It also helps my clients when they see these palettes in their 3D design renders I provide.

Ordering samples and putting them together is an invaluable practice in the design creative process. It allows us to explore different materials, colors, and textures, enabling them to make informed decisions and refine their ideas. I always recommend ordering samples of anything you can before purchasing. This is why I started creating these palettes. My aspiration was to offer homeowners an extraordinary collection of room design palettes, ones they would never to think of combining themselves. Each purchased palette provides links to every item so you can purchase samples freely and easily. You can also mix and match palettes and have fun with them! It's a great way to get inspired and start your room project on the right foot!

Starting your room design with a full palette allows you to create a visually stunning and personalized space. It provides you with the opportunity to explore different color combinations, textures, and patterns, resulting in a room that reflects your unique style and creates a harmonious and balanced atmosphere.
