Outstanding Spring Decor Ideas for Your Home

Updated: Apr 1

We survived the holidays, and now we're in the middle of winter - but not for long! Spring is just around the corner. I, for one, am getting excited with every day that passes. In just a few weeks, I'll be seeing daffodils and crocuses coming up through the soil, and when that happens, there will be no stopping it. I started to spring up my home - and helping others do it too.

Spring is a time of pastel colors, flowers, new life, new beginnings and new hope for the coming year. As the days get longer and the temperatures get warmer, these easy spring decorating ideas can help make your home as fresh and beautiful as the landscape outside.

Spring 2023 Decor Idea #1: Replace Pillow Covers, Duvet Covers and Throws

Household fabrics like pillow covers, duvet covers and throw pillows are easy to change out from one season to the next, so I always recommend having more than one season’s worth at your house. Flower patterns and gingham are both examples of the type of patterns I like to see on fabrics at this time of year. Of course, you can't go wrong with solid pastel colors, either.

Some tips:

  • Coordinate colors. Obviously it's important to coordinate the colors of your pillows, duvet and throws with the surrounding room. While you may not be able to find a pastel color that makes sense with the other colors in the room, you can always find a flower pattern or gingham in a color that coordinates with the rest of your house.

  • Don't hesitate to mix and match patterns. You don’t need to take yourself too seriously. Mixing and matching various patterns and solids adds visual interest to your room. Be brave!

Spring 2023 Decor Idea #2: Decorate With Fresh Flowers!

If you're looking for spring decor ideas and a way to treat yourself to a fun decor item this year, I recommend getting a fresh flower subscription from a local florist. Fresh flowers are stunning, and help add cheer and beauty to your home.

One thing I love about floral subscriptions is that the flowers tend to change seasonally. This month, it might be tulips. Next month, it might be irises or primroses. As the year goes on, your flower subscription will continue to freshen and beautify your home.

Even if you don't wish to spend the money on a flower subscription, I still highly recommend decorating your home with fresh flowers in spring. Even small bouquets picked from the yard can be eye-catching, and they also make the house smell so good! The longer the bouquet lasts, the better. Some tips for prolonging the life of your bouquet:

  • Re-cut the ends of the stems every few days

  • Remove leaves that fall below the water line

  • Keep the vase clean and the water fresh

  • Remove dead blossoms

  • Keep the bouquet out of sunlight

  • Buy local and buy seasonal

  • Purchase your flowers from a reputable florist known for dealing with the freshest flowers possible

Spring 2023 Decor Idea #3: Spring Clean

Ok, so not really a decor idea, but it will make all the difference! Spring-cleaning is no joke: it's important. I don’t know about you but the second the temps hit 50s I’m cleaning the closets, redecorating my shelf decor and switching out those smaller rugs that soaked up all the winter dirt and snow.

Start by decluttering, and then clean after.

Decluttering can be a long process. Start by making a plan. Go room by room, closet by closet. As you find things that you no longer need, make three piles: donate, recycle and throw away. I recommend making fast decisions about what to keep and what to get rid of. The more thinking you do, the harder your job becomes.

If you haven't used it in more than two years, you probably don't need it!

Not sure what to do about those sentimental items that you don't want anymore? Give them to a family member or loved one who will appreciate them.

If you haven't decluttered in a long time, then you should plan on this project taking several days. You can do it over the course of several weekends, or set aside several consecutive days to get it done.

Once you've decluttered, then it's time to deep clean. Don't forget to vacuum your upholstery, clean your drapes and blinds, dust the ceiling fan blades and wash down your walls. The cleaner your house gets, the lighter you'll feel. And, cleaning begets cleaning. Once you start, you won't want to stop!

Spring 2023 Decor Idea #4: Update Your Furniture Layout

One easy way to update the look and feel in your house is to move your furniture around. Rearrange your furniture in rooms like the living room and family room, where there's often enough space to put your furniture in several configurations. When the work is done, the room should look entirely new.

Remember to create a focal point in each room, whether that's a mirror over the fireplace, a piece of artwork on a coffee table, or a stunning pendant light. Not sure what to change in your room? Here are a few items I added to my shop to give you some ideas! My Terracotta palette would also be great for Spring changes!

Spring 2023 Decor Idea #5: Paint Inside and Out

I think the single most dramatic, relatively low-cost thing you can do to freshen a room is paint the walls. I recommend repainting at least one room in your home every few years. Freshening the paint on the walls makes the room look extra clean and well-maintained. Pick a color that's different from the color of your walls currently. Shake things up!

You can hire a contractor to get the work done, or just do the work yourself. This is what I recommend:

  • Paint samples on large white cardboard and wait for the samples to dry before selecting the color for your home. Make the sample squares relatively large - maybe 2 feet by 2 feet. Big sample squares give you a good idea of what the colors really look like.

  • If you're painting the walls yourself, take your time. Don't rush, or you'll make mistakes. Cut in the edges and corners carefully. Use quality paint brushes and paint to ensure an even coat. Apply a coat of primer first, or buy paint with primer already mixed in.

  • Don't be afraid to choose some daring, bold spring colors. Robin's egg blue, primrose pink, daffodil yellow - choose something exciting! Remember: you can always repaint at a later time if you're not happy with the end result.

This is also a good time of year to paint your home's exterior. Painting your home's exterior makes the transformation to a clean and beautiful home complete. If you're painting the exterior of your house, I recommend hiring an experienced painter, just because that's a lot of work. It's also a good idea to work with a local New Jersey interior designer or a specialist when choosing the color.
