A Spring Reset at Home (After a Long Winter)

If you live in New Jersey, actually anywhere in the North/Northeast, you know this winter has felt especially long.

Weeks of cold. Snow that didn’t seem to take a break. Very few of those in-between days where you can open a window and pretend spring is close.

After months of that kind of weather, I start to feel it in my house.

Not that anything is wrong — just heavy. Closed in.

And that’s usually my cue.

Not to renovate. Not to redesign. Just to reset.

This season, the first change I made wasn’t visible at all.

I ordered new sleeping pillows.

It sounds small, but it didn’t feel small. I paired them with a soft waffle knit and switched to a percale cotton comforter — lighter, crisper, breathable. After months of winter bedding, it honestly feels like heaven.

The room looks almost exactly the same but it feels completely different.

And that’s when I’m reminded that a refresh isn’t always about aesthetics. Sometimes it’s about comfort. Weight. How a space supports you at the end of a long day.

The mudroom was next.

If you’ve lived through enough winters here, you know how hats and gloves somehow multiply.

Every year we collect more — and somehow they’re always too small, mismatched, or never the ones anyone actually reaches for.

So I finally emptied the baskets and went through everything.

We kept what fits, what’s worn, what we truly use. The rest went.

It’s funny how one small edit can shift the entire feeling of a space. The mudroom went from feeling crowded and chaotic to calm and intentional again.

Clutter has a way of blending into the background until you decide it doesn’t get to anymore — and for me, that usually happens in the spring.

Then I turned to the shelves.

Over time, they quietly fill up. A frame here. A decorative object there. Something seasonal that never quite made its way back into storage.

This year, I removed more than I thought I would.

I swapped heavier pieces for lighter ones. Fewer objects. More negative space. A simple plant instead of layered decor. Artwork leaned casually instead of stacked and styled.

There’s something about open space that feels very spring.

It allows the room to exhale.

I’ve been opening windows whenever the temperature allows — even if it’s just for a few minutes. Letting fresh air move through rooms that have been sealed up for months. It's amazing what just a few minutes of fresh air can do for your soul.

Swapping out heavier throws for lighter cotton. Letting the bed feel crisp instead of bundled. Bringing in greenery where I can.

None of these changes are dramatic.

But together, they shift the feeling of the house.

And that shift is what I think most of us are actually craving this time of year.

In my work, I see this every spring too.

Clients come to me thinking they need something bigger — a full redesign, new furniture, a major change. And sometimes they do. But often, what they’re responding to is weight.

Too much visual noise. Too many layers. Too many things that have quietly accumulated.

Sometimes the answer isn’t more.

It’s less — done thoughtfully.
